Buying art doesn't have to be difficult, and it can be fun. There's a famous saying that "Art is the expression of silence." What this means is that, even if we don't speak much, we can express our deepest thoughts in a way that words cannot. Art is beautiful, unique, and allows us to look at the world differently.

Art enhances a home as well as the mind of the homeowner/art collector.

It’s important to think about art as an investment because it can help you achieve your goals. A painting or sculpture can express your personality, change the look of a room, remind you of important events in your life and make you feel good.

You don’t have to be an expert to collect art. Many young collectors say they started because they simply liked something they saw online or in a gallery or museum. But buying art doesn't have to be complicated.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to buy art.

In fact, there are plenty of ways you can purchase art without spending a dime. Challenge yourself to visit one flea market or thrift store each month to see what kind of art you can find for $10 or less. You'll probably find some great pieces, and if it doesn't work out in your space later on, you're only out a few bucks!

You can also contact local artists directly and buy their work at a discount. They will probably be eager to sell their artwork to someone who appreciates it, so don't be afraid to ask them if they offer any kind of deal!

If you want your new artwork framed, take it along with you when you go shopping for frames at the local craft store. This way, you'll know exactly what size of frame will best fit the artwork. You can usually buy frames for about $15-20 each that look totally chic and high-end (and nobody will ever know they're from Target).

Art is a way to express your personality, who you are and what you feel.

Art is a way to express who you are and your personality. Art is a way to express your feelings and your mood. Art is a way to express your creativity and your love for a particular topic.

Purchasing art can be as easy as finding a couple pieces that you really love.

You don't have to be an art connoisseur or collector to buy original art. With the right guidelines, finding a piece that you loveβ€”and that you'll love for years to comeβ€”is as easy as buying anything else online.

If you're not sure where to start, try walking into your home and thinking about what kind of art you want to hang on your walls. Do you want something colorful? Something bold and graphic? A nature scene? Or something more abstract? Give yourself more specific parameters, like the mood of the room or what color it is. Finding one or two pieces that will make your heart sing is always better than buying several pieces that are just okay.

Focus on quality, not quantity. It's always better to have fewer high-quality pieces than a lot of lesser-quality works (unless you need filler!).

A piece doesn't need a backstory for you to love it.

A piece doesn't need a backstory for you to love it. You don't need to know the artist's heartbreak, or how many hours they spent creating the piece, in order to appreciate it. You don't need a backstory to be able to connect with the piece. And you definitely don't need a backstory to buy art.

I'll say that again:

You don't need a backstory to buy art.

If you're buying art for an empty room, you need to decorate first.

You can’t buy art for an empty room.

It doesn’t matter how expensive the painting is or how many colors are in it, if there’s nothing else to complement the art, it will look like a mistake.

In order to buy art for your space you need to know:

  • The size of the space you want to decorate (in square feet)
  • The color palette that you want to use in the space (for example blue and yellow)
  • What style you want your furniture and decor to be (modern, vintage, etc.)

Since there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to art, feel free to break them.

    • There are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to art. It is purely personal; you should buy what you love and decorate your home in a way that makes you happy.
    • If you don't like certain elements later, everything is ok! You can always change your mind, or even just look at something differently by introducing new pieces of art into the existing collection. For example, if your favorite piece of work is a sculpture but it isn’t large enough to be the focal point of your room, then place it next to a large painting that complements it nicely: together they will create an interesting conversation piece.
    • Don't be afraid to mix and match different styles in one spaceβ€”it'll create visual interest and make sure there's something for everyone in the room.
    • Trust your instincts – if you want something big and bold then go with it because most importantly...
    • This is YOUR home! So feel free to break all rules except one--only buy what you love!

Buying art can be more simple than you think

You’re not buying art to impress other people, you’re buying art to impress yourself, so if it’s a piece that you like and will enjoy looking at in your home (or office) every dayβ€”you should buy it.

It’s important to take your time when making any purchase, but even more so when purchasing art. Don’t feel pressured into buying on the spot or in a rush; instead, walk away and think about your options. If you really love something go for itβ€”but if you are feeling uncertain about the purchase, there is no shame in walking away from the sale.

In an attempt to support my son, who has been intending to purchase an artwork for his girlfriend, I did some study. Regarding art, I appreciate you pointing out that there are no hard-and-fast rules and that you should purchase what you love and design your home in a way that brings you joy. I’ll be sure to let him know about this and encourage him to look into artists that he can check out.
