Discover the Creative Journey of Jordan Barker: A Self-Taught Visionary
I am thrilled to present an interview with Jordan Barker, a New York-based entrepreneur and self-taught artist whose work has captivated me. Visiting his Chelsea studio offered a deeper look into his passion and dedication. Despite no formal training, Jordan has refined his skills to become a master of his craft.
As an entrepreneur, I relate to the dedication and effort involved in building something from the ground up, and Jordan embodies this spirit fully. His passion for art reflects a belief that it enhances life and generates an energy supporting mental health. For Jordan, art is more than just aesthetics—it’s deeply connected to each piece he creates. I was truly impressed by his expressive and profound approach.paces and evokes emotion. I want to expand my distribution and showcase my designs on items like clothing and notebooks. I also hope to share life lessons through public speaking, inspiring others.
Art is not just a decorative choice; it’s a powerful expression of cultural heritage, personal identity, and social commentary. This Q&A explores the journey, creative process, and future goals of Jordan Barker, an artist known for his unique style.
1. How did you first become interested in art?
I started with fulfilling a personal need for a rustic coffee table that I couldn’t find, so I made one from an upcycled pallet. With no prior experience in building, I enjoyed the process of learning and creating. This mindset of repurposing readymade objects eventually led me to painting.
2. What inspires your work and where do you find inspiration for your pieces?
I don’t draw or doodle, and I’ve never taken an art class. My inspiration comes from within—an uncontrolled, free-spirited meditative state that brings a sense of presence and calm amidst life’s quiet chaos.
3. How would you describe your style or aesthetic?
My style is abstract, eclectic, and highly texturized. Initially, my work was controlled and structured. As I grew more confident, I experimented with latex, aerosol, and oil paints, creating a new style shaped by trial and error.
4. Can you talk about a piece or series that is particularly meaningful to you?
A significant lesson came from a piece titled “DJ,” which I sold. I hesitated on this painting, feeling it was incomplete. Overcoming self-doubt, I painted black squiggly lines, which made the colors come alive. This taught me that talent and effort were already on the canvas—they just needed highlighting. It’s a metaphor for life: we all have unique qualities that sometimes need the right moment or people to shine.
5. How do you approach the creative process?
Without a formal art background, I find it best to start painting without specific intentions. This approach puts me in a meditative state where I release tension. Once I apply enough paint and texture, I rotate and study the canvas, building on natural compositions. Mistakes and self-doubt are part of the journey, but persistence leads to satisfying results.
6. How has the art world evolved in recent years, and how has it impacted your work?
The art world has evolved through inclusivity and accessibility. Art fractionalization, like Masterworks, allows more people to own art. Social media and ecommerce give artists direct access to collectors, fostering independent voices outside traditional galleries. This shift pushed me to explore NFTs and maintain an online presence.
7. What advice would you give emerging artists?
Don’t be afraid to show your work—it’s natural to fear the worst outcome, but most will be surprised by positive feedback. If you don’t share, no one will know your work exists. Also, ask questions. Reaching out to experienced artists helped me progress faster and avoid their mistakes.
8. What are your future goals as an artist?
I’ve started selling original artwork and high-end prints. Making art accessible brings joy, knowing it transforms spaces and evokes emotion. I want to expand my distribution and showcase my designs on items like clothing and notebooks. I also hope to share life lessons through public speaking, inspiring others.
