I’ve spent years trying to fit into spaces that didn’t feel like they were made for me—corporate boardrooms, societal expectations, and even my own self-doubt. From Corporate Hustle to Creative Freedom
For 16 years, I worked in corporate finance, traveling the world as a senior corporate trainer. I was teaching, leading, and succeeding by every traditional metric, but deep down, I was restless. My creative spirit—the part of me that found joy in music, art, and self-expression—was suffocating.
When the market crashed, so did the world I had carefully built. At the time, I thought it was the worst thing that could happen to me. But looking back now, I see it as the moment that set me free. Losing my job forced me to ask myself: What would you do if there were no limits?
I poured myself into creating. I started a T-shirt line, launched an online magazine, wrote books, made music under my alter ego REX WES, and eventually found my calling in digital art. It was through digital art that I finally discovered how to turn my experiences, struggles, and unapologetic perspective into something tangible—something that speaks to people on a deeply personal level.
The Art of Being Unapologetic
Art, for me, isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about telling stories, challenging norms, and embracing the parts of ourselves that society tells us to hide. My artwork is unapologetic because I refuse to shrink myself or my message to fit anyone else’s expectations.
Take “Unapologetic Unity: Cracked Faces” as an example. This piece represents so much of what I stand for. Inspired by music, particularly artists like Todrick Hall who celebrate individuality, this piece is about peeling away the layers of code-switching and conformity.
As an African-American, I’ve lived the experience of working twice as hard to be recognized, only to feel the pressure to conform to environments that don’t fully embrace my authenticity. The cracks in this piece represent shedding those layers and embracing the freedom to say: I am fabulous. I love myself. And I don’t care what anyone else thinks about that.
It’s bold. It’s personal. And it’s a visual reminder to unapologetically love who you are—even when it means you’ll have haters, because if you’re not making waves, you’re not making a difference.
